INTRODUCTION Thank you for taking the time to have a look into the life of St. Johns church Inverness. Many people look at Church web sites in search of their past, or rather to trace their distant relatives. St Johns has onsite records going back to 1835. The history of the Church is much older than that. St. Johns in name is, in some respects, the oldest congregation in Inverness. Church politics and the reign of William and Mary caused the Episcopal church to be dis-established in 1688. That act caused St. Johns to begin its travels in Inverness. The present St. Johns in Southside road was built in 1903 and houses much of the furniture of the previous church built in 1835. St. Johns has the comfortable feel of a building which is relatively new, and yet, is also quite old. It is a prayerful, peaceful and presence-filled building.
The Purpose of the Church This church has survived all that politics both secular and religious. So St. John's has a real purpose and mission. this mission undoubtedly will change decade after decade and as a congregation we will have to be ready to addapt and change. This is something St. Johns has proven down over the past three hundred years or so, that is capable of doing. At this moment in time, St. Jons is growing into being the Church meeting place for the community in the Crown district. It provides a venue for nursery school, dance classes, a place for birthday parties, has a very active musical life and is a venue for musical concerts and soon also art classes. As a congregation we provide a monthly Soup & Sandwich Lunch (a place where we all can come and meet, eat and talk ). The ladies of the congregation meet on Fridays to cross stitch more kneelers, and dare I suggest it, exchange the local news We have a lively fund raising and social events committee. Their remit is , in part to raise the additional funds which are needed to continue Gods works in this part of Inverness. they also create those events which allow the congregation to come together and relax in one another's company. So when we meet Sunday by Sunday we meet as friends and not as strangers. We have an annual parish picnic, harvest lunch, Burns supper and many other such events. Part of our Sunday worship includes fellowship over a cup of coffee at the end of morning worship. To many that may appear to be a simple thing,, it is also an important thing, as it allows us to share time with our fellow members and visitors.

The modern Liturgy (1982) is used in our Sunday morning service. Though the modern liturgy is used, the format of the service is very traditional - the hymns are the well-known and much loved-favourites, but we also sing some of the better modern hymns.
Our old Liturgy (1970) is used at the midweek said service.
Evening prayers (Raigmore Hospital) is form of specially constructed service which opens this office to the wider church, and to those who are just seeking comfort whilst they are or a member of their family is in hospital.
At St. John's we have a very fine pipe organ, considered by some to be one of the very best in the Highlands.
